:iconcopyrighted1plz::iconcopyrighted2plz: :icongimpuserstamp1-plz::icongimpuserstamp2-plz: made in GIMP 2.8

Inspired by #TheArtOfManipulation
Resources: My own

Yup, yet another Gimp-torial on the joys of masking. I'll probably take a break from masking and move on to another topic. We'll see where my thoughts land in coming weeks.

Either way, Enjoy and I hope it helps!

:star: Extra tips:
:bulletblue: Compatible with Gimp 2.6 +
:bulletblue: To lock a mask layer, right click the image under the Layers Tab and uncheck Edit Layer Mask by selecting it.

Excuse my lateness in replying back to you (I've been away from DA for a bit) but thank you so much for the favs and the watch, and I hope the tutorial was helpful to you!
(btw: don't worry about it, Gimp is always a learning process regardless of how long you've worked with it, lol)

Thank you so much for making this!
Masks are really such a simple and great concept, but for some reason I have a hard time grasping how to use them.
Your tutorial is coming in very handy for a photomanipulation I'm attempting for my cousin. :D

Here's the photomanip done using your tutorial on masking: [link]

I can't say enough how simple and easy to understand your tutorial is! I don't know why masking seemed like such a hard concept for me to grasp, but your tutorial really helped!

 Aw, nice job, sweetheart!

Hm, maybe it's just how familiar and comfortable you get with gimp, cuz I was the same way with masking. It wasn't until last year that masking made sense to me and changed my world, lol.

Again you're welcome, and thanks so much for viewing my tutorial :).

Thanks! :aww:

Perhaps...
I learned a bit about masking back when I was taking Digital Photography and Graphics in high school, but it wasn't something I had used too often. I think it may have even confused me a bit then. Heh.

I'm just glad yours makes sense! *cannot stress it enough*

In GIMP 2.8 you can just reverse erasing (it's an option to select). Still, that's pretty useful.

Ah, the Anti-erase, it's in gimp 2.6 as well I think, but yea it's also another good way to maintain your work without the fear of messing up and starting over.
:) Thanks for your comment and viewing my tutorial!

Yeah, I used it like once or twice :D
BTW, if I change the picture, the mask stays intact, right?

You can't change the picture with a mask.
Well...You can do a copy of the mask and add a new picture with a white mask, paste the previous mask, and anchor it, if that's what you mean.
If you mean like adding a new layer as you would normally, then the mask will still be on whatever layer you have it on.

I just mean if the mask can be some sort of a template. Like I'd make it into some shape and try which picture looks the best with it or like making a template for a meme.

You can, but open the image(s) you're going to use the saved mask on first. If you don't, every image you open as a layer will automatically be gray-scaled.

some advice: in your third step, you said: "you can select between either the white mask or the actual image", and at that step, you selected the image. I think in the next step, you should mention that we must select the mask before we select handy-dandy paintbrush and start painting.
